Roof Heating vs. Ice Dams

February 08, 2010 00:02 AM  BY  AMY MORBY

The Battle You’re Sure to Never Lose

Spring is just around the corner, and with it comes warmer weather. While we’d all like to see the sun again, we don’t want those pesky ice dams to form on our roofs that can quickly turn a delightful spring into an expensive season of our discontent. Fortunately for all of us, radiant roof heat is here to keep our upcoming months pleasant and ice-dam-disaster free.

Radiant roof heating system in action.Ice dams are a common problem that often lead to catastrophic solutions. The good news, however, is that radiant roof heating systems are an easy and affordable option to prevent ice dams before they even start.

Ice dams occur when warmer weather or interior heat warms the heavy snowfall on your roof, leaving a pool of water under the feet of snow that quickly accumulates and starts leaking into your home.  Besides causing catastrophic water damage, these ice dams can also destroy your gutters, promote toxic mold growth, and potentially cause structural damage that’s sure to leave you with a headache. With so much on the line, it only makes sense to install a radiant roof heating system.

Radiant roof heat is the best way to stay ahead in the battle against ice dams. Warmzone offers a variety of roof heating solutions that are sure to keep your home safe from structural damage and your family safe from dangerous icicles. You can experience the benefits of a radiant roof heating system no matter what type of home you have—new or old. Additionally, our team will work with you to create a roof heating solution that’s catered specifically to you.

Don’t wait for the dam to break—install a radiant roof heating system now before it’s too late!

Icicles vs. Radiant Roof Heating

August 31, 2009 00:08 AM  BY  AMY MORBY

The Battle That the Pointy Menaces Will Never Win.

Icicles are a mainstay of the winter season. You can’t go anywhere in the cold winter months without seeing those frosty spectacles dangling precariously from gutters and roofs everywhere. They may seem harmless—maybe even iconic to the season—but icicles also pose a serious safety hazard for home and business owners everywhere. Luckily for you, radiant roof heat is here to eradicate these icy menaces.

Radiant heated roof.In 2007, an Eerie man was knocking icicles off his roof when one went rogue, pierced his rubber boot, and lodged itself in his foot. Crazy? Yes. Rare? Definitely. But it can happen.

If they’re not falling from great heights and piercing your feet, then icicles are wreaking havoc on your roof. Icicles lead to ice dams, which melt and then refreeze, getting bigger and bigger every time. When these dams melt, they can back into your attic, causing disastrous water damage. Ice dams can also get heavy, causing all kinds of strain on your gutters, drains, and downspouts.

Yes, icicles are a major bummer, but Warmzone’s roof heating options will help you and your home stay safe and icicle-free for years to come. Radiant roof heating is the latest and greatest way to prevent icicles and ice dams safely and efficiently. Fully-automated, radiant roof heating systems melt the snow on your roof quickly and efficiently with absolutely no effort from you. And the best part, staying ice dam-free can cost you less than $0.35 an hour for a 300-square-foot area.

So don’t chance a hole in your foot, a destroyed gutter, or thousands of dollars in water damage. Install your radiant roof heating system and banish those pesky icicles from your rooftop once and for all!

Roofs and gutters everywhere rejoice: radiant heat is no longer just for driveways. That’s right, radiant roof heating systems are here, and they’re the latest and greatest way to protect your home from ice and snow damage this winter.

Every winter, Americans everywhere deal with snow and ice buildup on their roofs that leaks into their attics and causes slippery sidewalks down below. It’s dangerous, it’s inconvenient, and it’s definitely expensive, but luckily for you, radiant roof heating is here to revolutionize the way you think about radiant heat.

Ditch the Snow Shovel This Winter

December 30, 2008 00:12 AM  BY  ROBERT COHEN

Winter time is near. Are you going to spend winter shoveling your walks, or enjoying the benefits of automatic snow removal?

For many people the first snow is right around the corner, and the thought of constant maintenance and snow removal is scarier than the ghosts on Halloween. That’s why when I decided to build an asphalt driveway leading to my barn and workshop, my thoughts turned to electric radiant snow removal.

There are a lot of radiant snow melting options out there, and it’s easy to get caught up in the hype. Before you make a decision, it is always good to do some research first. I chose Danfoss GX electric radiant heating mats and this is why:

I looked up several different snow melting systems and I discovered something very surprising. Many of the systems on the market claiming to be cutting edge radiant heating technology were not initially made as a heating cable. These systems are often low voltage, and have very little insulation, which makes them easy to damage. But the biggest reason I said no to this cable is the high cost. Expensive and higher chance of failure = don’t waste your money.

Choosing to pave the new driveway with asphalt made selecting a radiant system even more difficult. The high temperatures from the asphalt can melt the cables of most systems. The Danfoss GX cables are durable with thick insulation, giving them the ability to withstand even hot asphalt.

Danfoss GX cables meet the ASHRAE standards for snow melting systems. Low voltage systems do not reach these standards.

The Danfoss offers a great warranty of 10 years and covers up to 2 times the cost of the original installation. Danfoss is one of the veteran radiant heating manufacturers in Europe (where radiant heat originated), and as a result, they really know what they are doing.

The choice to choose Danfoss GX cables was obvious for me because it best suited my project. But really, who can say no to high quality at a lower cost?

Heating Systems Aren't Just For Indoor Use Anymore

December 30, 2008 00:12 AM  BY  STACEY BARRUS

Most homeowners think that once they’ve raked the leaves off their lawn and planted flower bulbs for next spring, there’s not much else to do for your lawn, landscaping, or flowerbeds. But just because it’s wintertime doesn’t mean you can’t protect your garden or lawn. In the colder months, heating systems are the best option to melt the ice and to protect your landscaping. Heating systems like heated driveways actually do more than just melt snow and ice from driveways and sidewalks. They also help preserve your landscaping while avoiding the use of harmful salt and chemicals.

Salt spread over asphalt and sidewalks to melt the ice can do a good bit of damage to lawns and landscape plants. When salt products are spread over streets and walkways, the salt inevitably splashes onto nearby foliage. The sodium chloride burns the plants and gets absorbed by the plants’ root systems. This just means you’ll have damage to repair in the springtime — so easily avoided with the use of heating systems.

Alternate ice-melt products won’t work as effectively as outdoor heating systems, either. You see, these systems don’t use any harmful chemicals, and they melt the ice so effectively that you don’t have to do any of the work. These heating systems are state of the art but easy to install for any contractor or do-it-yourself expert.

Heating Systems Tip: Snow melting heating systems can be installed in almost any driveway and can be retrofit into existing concrete and asphalt.
