One such customer had a home project that required extensive planning and help from the Warmzone team. His project required multiple radiant heating products for the varying rooms and types of flooring. The first step and also the hardest part of the process is the planning. It’s important to determine which walls you want to place the thermostats and to calculate the number of amps needed to power a radiant floor system for the varying rooms and square footage. Determining the correct amperage needed can get confusing when multiple rooms and multiple kinds of systems are involved. We like to make the process as painless as possible. Once you give us the dimensions and floor layout of your project, along with the walls where you would like to place the thermostats, Warmzone will provide a CAD drawing of the entire installation, complete with electrical work and thermostats. For the hardwood floor surfaces, our experts recommended IdealHeat’s Warm Ribbon. This radiant heat product is unique because it can go directly beneath hardwood flooring, without embedding the product in thinset or requiring additional installation steps. Simply secure the Warm Ribbon mat with the provided adhesive backing and install the hardwood flooring as usual, taking steps not to the drive nails through the Warm Ribbon.

A Danfoss LX radiant heating system was used throughout the rest of the house for the tile floors in the bathroom and kitchen areas. Tile floor installations already require a layer of thinset, which is also needed to embed the Danfoss LX cable. After the heating cable is properly spaced and secured using the cable straps or using the Danfoss LX mats (which comes with rows already pre-spaced and secured), no extra steps are needed. So if you already know how to install a tile floor, you are well on your way to being a saavy radiant heat installer. Just spread a thin layer of thinset over the floor base and heat cables and proceed with a standard tile floor installation.

A radiant floor heating project must be done up to code. An easy way to make sure this happens is to hire an electrician to make the connections between the thermostat and the floor system, and from the thermostat to your circuit breaker. A single thermostat handles 15-16 amps of floor heating. Larger rooms may require multiple thermostats or a Master Slave thermostat that can handle up to 32 amps.
